The salt windmills of Marsala are situated in a vast expanse of salt pans that stretch towards the sea. As you approach the windmills, you'll be struck by their distinctive shape and design. These traditional wooden structures, with their elegant sails and rotating wheels, have been used for centuries to grind salt and pump seawater into the salt pans. The salt windmills and basins are still in use today.
The 30km road is one of the most evocative routes in Italy, and if you get out of your vehicle, you'll be able to feel the salt in the air! The salt pans themselves are a beautiful sight, with their shimmering pools of water and the delicate crusts of salt that form on their surface.
